We would like to walk you through the following brief descriptions of the most popular interior design styles meant to give you an understanding and edge in choosing the look you would like your home to have.

MODERN

Modernist designs are known for their purist sensibilities including clean lines, spaciousness, and efficiency. It is a very popular style in Europe and North American condo living due to the spaciousness that it emphasizes. There is the absence of moldings and corbels, yet presence of very subtle textures, and nothing that creates a busy look.

Style is reflected through technological materials such as stainless steel, glass, plastic, smooth wood veneers and other sleek materials. High-gloss lacquer finishes, exotic wood veneers, and stainless steel accents create a high-tech look.

CONTEMPORARY

Contemporary is of the moment. It is whatever’s different and what works for today. It’s uncluttered. Contemporary designs have some of the high-tech look and functionality of a modern design, but are not purist in style and design. One of the hallmarks of good contemporary design is its compatibility. In other words, pieces from different periods are combined to create a richer, more interesting look in a room.

In a contemporary space, it...s common to find a juxtaposition of styles such as an antique rug or historic wood table used with an ultra-modern sofa in a streamlined and technologically advanced space. All it takes is the confidence to play a little, and a new way of looking at things.

TRADITIONAL/CLASSIC kitchen

Ornamental elements such as moldings and posts are commonly used in a traditional design to reflect timeless elegance and sophistication. The classical style is represented by crown moldings, light valences, raised panel doors, columns with ornaments, hardwood flooring, and rich materials such as tumbled marble.kitchen

COUNTRY living room

The country style is a casual version of the traditional style. Materials that are hand made or

have a hand made look are preferred and have more variation. Worn and weathered items are celebrated and remove formality for a space. Itâ..s all about comfort.

Kişisel bir konuda okuyucularımın görüşüne ihtiyacım var. İşte düştüğüm ikilem:

23 yaşındayım, ensdüstriyel tasarımın kıt kanaat varolduğu bir ülkede mesleğim bu. İyi bir öğrenciydim, yaptığım işte de iyiyim. Endüstriyel tasarım benim için bir tutku, başka tasarım alanlarına kayan arkadaşlarım olduysa da grafik, web, moda, iç mekan, tekstil tasarımı gibi dallar beni hiç çekmedi, vazgeçemedim endüstriyel tasarımdan. Herhangi bir giderim yok, dolayısıyla çalışmaya aslında ihtiyacım yok şu an. Ben sadece kariyerime adım atmak, birşeyler öğrenmek için çalışmak istedim. Ama hem gelecekte kendi ofisimi kurmak, hem de bir süre yurtdışında yaşamak istediğim ve ailem de zengin olmadığı için para kazanmam da lazım aslında. 8 aydır çalıştığım bu yer büyük ve kurumsal bir şirket, satın almacılara bağlı olarak çalışan, şirketteki tek tasarımcıyım ve bu benim ilk işim. Tek tasarımcı olduğum için tasarım süreci iş hayatında nasıl işler gibi kritik bir konuyu ve okulda kapsamlı olarak öğretilmeyen üretim ve proje sonuçlandırma gibi önemli bilgileri edinemiyorum. Aylardır işten ayrılmanın hayaliyle yaşıyordum, işten ayrılmam halinde ihtiyacım olduğunu gözlemlediğim becerileri edinmek için kafamda bir program oluşturdum ve Şubat'ın ilk haftası, yani önümüzdeki Pazartesi ay sonunda işten ayrılacağımı bildirmeye karar verdim. Ama daha bunu söyleyemeden patron bana zam vermesin mi? Ufacık, minnacık, belli belirsiz bir zam, ama maaşına zam yapmış patrona da "kusura bakmayın ben ayrılacağım" nasıl denir ki?? İkilemim şu; yine de ayrılacağımı söylemeli miyim yoksa bir süre daha beklemeli miyim? Ömrümü burada, ya da böyle büyük bir şirkette bir eleman olarak geçirmek istemediğimi ve burada en fazla 1, işler çok iyi giderse hadi hadi 2 yıl geçirip gideceğimi zaten baştan beri biliyordum. Önce, avantajlar:

-Saygın bir şirket.

-Fazla kazanmıyorum ama kazandığımın tamamı bankaya gidiyor. Türkiye'de başlangıç seviyesi tasarımcılara genelde para bile ödemiyorlar, öderlerse de asgari ücret gibi komik bir rakam veriyorlar.

-Giriş-çıkış saatleri belli. Esnek saatler değil yani. Aşırı meşgul de olmadığım için 6'da çıkıp 7'de evde olabiliyorum. Oysa şirketteki diğer insanlar(satın almacılar vs.) mesai ücreti diye birşey olmamasına rağmen geç saatlere kadar çalışıyorlar.

-Türkiye'de tasarımcılar için her zaman iş kıtlığı var zaten, şimdi bir de kriz eklendi.

-İhtiyacım olan şeyler, öğrenemiyor da olsam kağıt üzerinde deneyim işte.

-Patron dedi ki devam eden yüksek lisansım ve iş arasında bir denge oluşturabilirmişiz.(Okula gitmem, tez yazmam gerekiyor da..)

-Sevgilimi o kadar az görebiliyorum ki her buluştuğumuzda "50 İlk Öpücük" filmindeki gibi sil baştan heyecan yaşıyoruz :P

Şimdi, dezavantajlar:

-Kağıt üzerinde tasarım işi olarak gözükse de aslında tasarım yapmıyorum, tasarım ve üretime dair bilmem şart olan şeyleri öğrenemiyorum. Kendimi kıvranır bir şekilde havadan tekstil deseni çizer buluyorum ki bu deneyimimin, ilgimin olmadığı bir alan ve çok zorlanıyorum.

-Deneyimli bir tasarımcının altında çalışmam gerektiğini düşünüyorum. Şirketteki tek tasarımcı olmak ve ilk işimin olması, hayalim olan kendi tasarım ofisimi kurabilmek için kimseye ihtiyaç duymadan işimi yapabilecek kapasiteye ulaşma hedefime beni hiç yaklaştırmıyor.

-Şirketin internet politikası son derece baskıcı, çoğu internet sitesi işyerinden bloklanmış. Gmail bile yok, gerisini hesap edin! Araştırma ve yeniliklerden haberdar olma yönü son derece kuvvetli bir insan olarak internet erişimimin blogspot ve typepad ile sınırlı olması beni son derece köreltiyor. Blog yazılarımın seyrelmesinden anlamışsınızdır!

-Ofis kuş uçmaz kervan geçmez biryerde, çok çirkin, ofisin olduğu tüm mahalle çirkin ve güvenliksiz, öğle saatinde 2 adım yürüyecek bir kaldırım bile yok. Camlar da açılmıyor. Boğulduğumu hissediyorum.

-Hiçliğin ortasında olduğu için gidiş gelişler sabah akşam birer saatten günde 2 saat yapıyor. Buraya toplu taşıma da gelmiyor, tek seçenek bir rodeoymuşçasına rahatsız olan servis. 7:30'da evden çıkıp akşam 7'de evde oluyorum yani günün 12 saati iş uğrunda geçiyor, sosyal hayatım, uykum yok.

-Çirkin ofise tıkılmış olmak ve interneti doğru düzgün kullanamamak yaratıcılık isteyen bir meslek için ilham bulmanın imkansız hale gelmesi demek. Öyle kuluçkaya oturup yumurtlar gibi tasarım çıkmıyor malesef!

-Yemekler öyle sağlıksız ve berbat ki kahvaltımı, öğle yemeğimi ve atıştırmalıklarımı hergün evde hazırlayıp getirmem gerekiyor. Yalnız yaşayan biri için bu da zor, çok da vakit alıyor.

-Aranan bir tasarımcı olmak için ihtiyaçım olan birkaç ekstra beceri daha var (bilmediğim bazı programları öğrenmek gibi), bunlar iş dışında zaman ayırıp kendi kendime öğrenmem gereken şeyler.

-Sevgilimi, ailemi, köpeğimi, sabahları koşuya gitmeyi, güne lanet ederek başlamamayı, hayattan zevk almayı özledim.

-Yüksek lisansımı tamamlamak istiyorsam tez çalışmalarına hız vermem, okula sık sık gitmem gerekli.

-Daha çok gencim ve herhangi bir sorumluluğum yok, ideallerim için risk alacaksam bundan daha uygun bir zaman olabilir mi?

Pazartesi patronumla toplantım var, ne yapmalıyım?

a-Ona ay sonunda işten ayrılmak istediğimi mi söyleyeyim? (Nasıl söylesem?)
b-Zam meselesi eskiyene kadar bir ay daha mı burada takılmalıyım?
c-3-4 ay sabredip bir yılı doldurmalı mıyım?

Hangi seçenek daha mantıklı?

I need some help from my insightful readers. Here is my dilemma:

I am 23, an industrial designer in a country which industrial design is extremely limited. I was a good student, and am generally pretty good at what I do. I have a passion for industrial design; not graphic, not web, not fashion, not interior, not textile. I don't need to work at the moment, I just wanted to work because I wanted to jumpstart my career. But money doesn't hurt as my family isn't rich and eventually I want to start my own design office or move abroad(both require money!). I have been in my current job for 8 months now and it is my first job ever. It is a very big retail company in home development and belongs to both Turkish and foreign partners. I am the only designer in the company, which means I don't have an experienced designer to learn from, and I really need to learn how the design process works in the business world and about production and project finalization. My dilemma is that I have been fantasizing about quitting my job for months now, had been noticing skills that I am missing and need to learn but can't learn here, had decided on a schedule for the following few months to accomplish my goals, and had set the first week of February to give my notice. But before I had a chance to state I wanted to quit, I got a raise! A small one, but you can't just say "I quit" to a boss who just gave you a raise. My dilemma is should I quit or should I wait some more? Because I KNOW I don't want to spend years here, and had planned in the very beginning to quit when I completed my first year here. I'll list the pros and cons of the job:

First, pros:

-It is a respectable company.

-The boss is extremely nice, sweet, smart and understanding. I do not want to burn bridges with her.

-I'm earning some money, not that much but I am able to put 100% of it to bank. Most entry level design jobs in Turkey don't even pay.

-Work hours are 8:30-6:00. It doesn't stretch any longer into the evening for me(I am not that busy), although everyone else in my department(the buyers) stay late despite not getting paid for extra hours.

-There is always a shortage of design jobs in Turkey, now there's the recession on top of that.

-I'm not learning anything but it is work experience on my resumé.

-The days I can see my boyfriend are so rare that he feels like a new man every day, like "50 First Dates".

-My boss said we can come up with a balance between work and my school (master's).


Now, cons:

-Although it is a design job on paper, I don't really get to do actualy design work, I am not learning anything related to design & production that I have to learn in order to have a career in industrial design. I find myself struggling to design textiles and boy, it ain't workin'.

-I feel like I should have been working as an underling to an experienced designer in order to learn things that I need if I want the freelance designing career of my dreams.

-The company has a suppressive websense policy, my web access is limited to blogspot and typepad, I can only do a fraction of the daily research I used to do. You can tell by the lack of blog posts!

-The office is in the middle of nowhere, it is ugly as hell, the whole neighbourhood is ugly and unsafe and I can't even go for a walk in my lunch hour. The windows don't open either. I feel like I am suffocating.

-Because it is in the middle of nowhere, my commute takes nearly one hour in the morning, and another one in the evening. No public transport comes here, we are collected by the company bus which feels like a rodeo. So as a result I leave at 7:30, come home at 7:00, Work takes approx. 12 hours everyday and I have no life. Haha.

-No proper web surfing and being stuck in an ugly office means inspiration is hard to come by.

-The food is so crappy and unhealthy, I have to pack my breakfast, lunch and snacks every day. That takes time!

-I see what I am missing in order to become a more sought-after designer, and some of those are things that I have to take time to learn outside of work.

-I miss my boyfriend, my family, my dog, running in the morning, sleeping, not cursing in the morning, having a life I enjoy.

-I really have to work on my thesis and go to school frequently if I want to get my master's degree!

-There are only 2 weeks of vacation per year. The remaining 50 weeks are all work. That sucks, but that's how it is in Turkey.

-I am only 23 and don't have any responsibilities, if this isn't the time to take risks and start anew, when is??

I have a meeting with my boss next Monday, should I:

a- Tell the boss I want to quit anyway (how do I tell her?)
b- Linger here for another month and tell the boss it isn't working for me
c- Stay here for 3-4 months and finish the year
d-Do I not make sense at all and should stick to this job (and die inside)?

Which option makes more sense?

I lovelovelove the packaging of Jamie Oliver's new food line. The red & greens and the handmade looking tags are so yummy looking! Come to think of it, food packaging in the UK is generally very well thought aesthetically and environmentally. How is food packaging in your country? Here most food packs are very generic, all packages look alike, all have almost the same fonts and style, and they are neither practical nor environment-friendly. That is good for not inducing consumption of packaged foods though; I know I could not resist buying all of Jamie's products above.

Jamie Oliver'ın yeni çıkardığı yiyecek grubunun ambalajlarına bayıldım. Kırmızı & yeşiller ve elle yapılmış gibi duran etiketler nefis gözüküyor! Düşündüm de İngiltere'de gıda ambalaşları genel olarak çok iyi düşünülmüş, hem estetik hem de çevre dostu olması açısından. Gerek her köşebaşında bulunan Marks & Spencer'ın, gerek gurme dükkanlardan ve pazarlardan alınan ürünlerin ambalajları hep çok güzel. Süpermarket markaları muhtemelen bu bahsettiklerim kadar yaratıcı ve güzel değillerdir, orada süpermarkete gitmediğim için bilemiyorum. Bizde de nedense bu alan pek gelişmemiş, bütün ambalajlar birbirine benziyor, üzerlerinde aynı yazı font'ları kullanılmış, farklı markaların muadil ürünlerinin ambalaj grafikleri yanıltıcı derecede aynı gözüküyor, çoğu hiç pratik değil ve üstelik çevre dostluğu da hak getire. Gerçi ambalajların cazip olmaktan uzak olması ambalajlanmış yiyeceklerin tüketimini körüklememesi açısından iyi birşey de olabilir; yukarıdaki kavanozların hepsini birden almamak için kendimle büyük bir savaş vermem gerekirdi muhtemelen.

Another British brand Cravendale has teamed up with half Finnish/half English/100% talented artist Sanna Annuka for their new milk packaging. The pictures speak for themselves, they're beautiful, and if I bought these I could never bring myself to throw away an empty bottle and thus I would be doomed to live in a trash-hoarder's nest for the rest of my life :)

Bir başka İngiliz markası Cravendale yarı Fin/yarı İngiliz/%100 yetenekli sanatçı Sanna Annuka ile işbirliği yaparak yeni süt ambalajlarını ona tasarlattı. Fazla yoruma gerek yok, resimlerden göreceğiniz gibi çok güzeller. Bunlardan satın alsam sanırım şişelerini atmaya asla kıyamaz ve ömrümün kalanını yavaşça dolan bir çöp evde geçirmeye mahkum olurdum :)
The colors, the typeface, the adorable icons are so fitting for a milk pack, I wonder why they weren't designed beautifully like this in the first place? I really am looking forward to seeing more food packaging designed by artists. If products are everywhere and we will be drowning in waste, then the least we can do is make it beautiful!

I never knew I would take so much pleasure on looking at stove photos, they're gorgeous.

4- I love how everything appears to be white but the walls actually are not white. The soft color is adding so much warmth and depth!
5- The gorgeous stone color of the stuff on the floor.

You might think white hallways are a good idea, but I would advise against it. We used to have a white entrance and every little bit of dirt/hair that comes from the street would show and gross us out.

Beyaz bir giriş hoş gözükebilir ama hiç tavsiye etmiyorum. Bizim bir ara beyaz bir antremiz vardı ama sokaktan kaçınılmaz olarak gelen her toz/kıl/vb. tanecik derhal göze batar ve pis gözükürdü.
