Fancy a Picnic?

These images, styled by Kelly McGuill, photogaphed by Eric Roth for Picnic Fashion put me right in the mood for a picnic...and make me miss college a bit. A huge percentage of my lunches in college consisted of sitting on the grass and sharing a sandwich with the stray dogs of the campus.

Can you believe we have been trying to keep up with fashion without the aid of H&M? That's right, we haven't had H&M in Turkey - until now. Now I guess it's only a matter of time before the home collection arrives as well. I'm not too crazy about every item, but it's not too bad either. Vegetable illustrations give me a warm feeling and remind me of Beatrix Potter. See a preview of H&M Home spring 2011 at Home Shopping Spy, if you like.

I'll tell you a little secret. This blog is named after a certain tea party, but the girl behind the blog doesn't own a decent tea set! I usually have my tea in glass Bodum mugs, which I unluckily have broken 2 of in the past 2 weeks. I have this fantasy of someone throwing me a surprise tea party for my birthday, I think I've mentioned this before on the blog last year but alas, no party still. I'd throw my own but as I said, I don't have the necessary tea goodies to live up to my fantasy party! This set by Plumo is pretty close to what I had in mind.

Çayı genelde poşetle, Bodum bardaklarda (Lipton sağolsun bedava stoklamışız, ne pahalıymış meğer) içiyorum, ocakta demlenmiş pek sevmiyorum. Kıymetli bir çaysa porselen demliğe havlu sarıp 3 dk bekletme yöntemini tercih ediyorum. Herkesi cici porselen fincanlarda içmeye zorlayacağım despot çay partisi verme fantazimi de bir türlü gerçekleştiremiyorum; güzel bir çaydanlığım olmadığı için. Bu ülkede pembe ya da kırmızı, yuvarlak hatlı, güzel saplı çaydanlık nerede satılır Allah aşkına? Şu yukardaki Plumo set fantazime epey yaklaşmış, gerçi bunun da su kaynatma kısmı yok.

This little hanger caught my eye while admiring Plumo. Last time I've been to London I brought a cast iron bell with birds on it in my suitcase. I think this explains how much I like things with birds on it! If you are like me, I urge you to follow Wee Birdy, if you aren't following already.

If you have been reading this blog for a while, you know how crazy I am about London, and how much I adore Liberty. The furniture design floor, the building itself, the clothes, the shoe lounge, the knick knacks, the prints, the art. You have probably heard that Liberty collaborated with Merci, a beautiful concept store in Paris which also blew my mind when I visited. Oddly enough, the moment I entered Merci, my first tought was "this place is Liberty of Paris". It's very stylish with its ex-factory building, books, amazing selection of stylish homewares and clothes, both new and vintage. You can see some pictures of Merci here and here.

-I quit my job, finally. I'm writing this post as a freelance designer!
- Finished my MA. My thesis, "A Sociocultural Study of the Design of a Consumer Product; The Apple iPod" is my gift to society. I'm hoping for Apple to send me a reward for my accomplishment, an iPad will do.
- My new laptop had to be reformatted twice already. Steer clear of Windows 7 64 bit, go for the 32 for now.
- My family will be getting two puppies soon, two of these dignified babies to be exact. Dogs that I train tend to have selective hearing, usually selecting not to hear unless I'm holding a treat. Any tips for books are welcome.
- I got the Ikea PS Karljohan stool. It is so adorable, I treat it like a pet. {Scroll down for more English}

- Yüksek Lisans bitti. "Bir Kullanım Ürünü Olarak Apple iPod Tasarımının Sosyo-Kültürel Yönden İredelenmesi" konulu ansiklopedimi, pardon tezimi topluma armağan ettim. Apple'dan çabalarımın takdiri olarak bir iPad, o da olmadı iPhone bekliyorum.
- Galiba yakında iki yavru köpek edineceğiz. Ay, nasıl yavru köpek mıncıklayasım var. Eğitim tavsiyelerine açığım, benim elimden geçen köpekler genelde seçici duyma duyusuna sahip oluyor; elimde yiyecek birşey yoksa genelde seçimi duymamaktan yana oluyor.
- 40 yılın başı yurtdışına gidersem H&M'den bayıla bayıla aldığım şeyleri sonra Peros'ta görüp yedekliyorum. Ömür boyu yetecek geyikli tişört ve leopar tayt stokum var.
- Daha alalı birkaç ay olan, üstündeki kağıtları çıkartmaya kıyamadığım laptop'ım 2 kere format yedi. Windows 7 64 bit'ten uzak durunuz, 32 bit takılınız.
- Oyun severler lafım size, Dragon Age Origins hayatımdan 80-90 saat çaldı. Muhteşem bir oyun. Yakında sevgilimin hesabından Aion Online'a başlayacağım. Avatar'ın güzel dünyasına doyamayanlar için biçilmiş kaftan.

When I was little, I was terrifed of mushrooms. I would be stressed out whenever my family cooked mushrooms. I have a specific memory of me going for a walk at the forest with my family and my mother stepped on a mushroom. I had nightmares about how we were all going to be poisoned. I think this silly fear had something to do with the TV news being flooded by people dying of mushroom poisoning. I got over the fear and now not only can I eat them, but I am fascinated by them. I gathered a few products for you, inspired by the delightful world of mushrooms.

Küçükken, mantarlar beni dehşete düşürürdü. Evde ne zaman mantar pişse endişeye kapılırdım. Hatta bir defa ailemle ormanda gittiğimiz yürüyüşte annem bir mantara basınca ailecek zehirleneceğiz diye günlerce kabus yaşamıştım. Bu yersiz korkunun altında o zamanlar haftada bir TV'de çıkan "Mantardan Zehirlendiler" haberlerinin etkisi olsa gerek. Şimdi mantarları afiyetle yemekle kalmıyorum, onları büyüleyici buluyorum. Mantarların çekiciliğinden ilham alan birkaç ürünü sizler için toplarladım.

"The concept for this piece comes from a childhood memory of making mushroom spore prints, creating a graphic pattern that repeats the pattern of the mushroom gills after the spores fall from the mushroom. After a time of exposure to the weather, mushrooms will grow out and live with the furniture for a few more years. As the nutritional material from the wood is eaten by the mushrooms, the furniture will start to break down, eventually dying while giving its life to the mushrooms."

I think "mortal" furniture is a good response to the throw-away culture. If we are going to get bored of it and eventually get rid of it, why not give the furniture a certain, natural lifetime?

Shinwei Rhoda Yen tasarımı Mobilyalarımı Mantarlar Yedi, doğal ahşaptan yapılıp içerisine mantar tohumu gömülmüş bir bahçe mobilyası. İklim koşullarına bir süre maruz kaldıktan sonra üzerinde mantarlar büyüyor ve mobilyayla birlikte birkaç yıl daha yaşıyorlar. Ahşaptaki besleyici maddeler mantarlar tarafından yenildikçe mobilya bozulmaya başlıyor, sonunda da hayatını mantarlara vererek ölüyor.

I lovelovelove the packaging of Jamie Oliver's new food line. The red & greens and the handmade looking tags are so yummy looking! Come to think of it, food packaging in the UK is generally very well thought aesthetically and environmentally. How is food packaging in your country? Here most food packs are very generic, all packages look alike, all have almost the same fonts and style, and they are neither practical nor environment-friendly. That is good for not inducing consumption of packaged foods though; I know I could not resist buying all of Jamie's products above.

Jamie Oliver'ın yeni çıkardığı yiyecek grubunun ambalajlarına bayıldım. Kırmızı & yeşiller ve elle yapılmış gibi duran etiketler nefis gözüküyor! Düşündüm de İngiltere'de gıda ambalaşları genel olarak çok iyi düşünülmüş, hem estetik hem de çevre dostu olması açısından. Gerek her köşebaşında bulunan Marks & Spencer'ın, gerek gurme dükkanlardan ve pazarlardan alınan ürünlerin ambalajları hep çok güzel. Süpermarket markaları muhtemelen bu bahsettiklerim kadar yaratıcı ve güzel değillerdir, orada süpermarkete gitmediğim için bilemiyorum. Bizde de nedense bu alan pek gelişmemiş, bütün ambalajlar birbirine benziyor, üzerlerinde aynı yazı font'ları kullanılmış, farklı markaların muadil ürünlerinin ambalaj grafikleri yanıltıcı derecede aynı gözüküyor, çoğu hiç pratik değil ve üstelik çevre dostluğu da hak getire. Gerçi ambalajların cazip olmaktan uzak olması ambalajlanmış yiyeceklerin tüketimini körüklememesi açısından iyi birşey de olabilir; yukarıdaki kavanozların hepsini birden almamak için kendimle büyük bir savaş vermem gerekirdi muhtemelen.

Another British brand Cravendale has teamed up with half Finnish/half English/100% talented artist Sanna Annuka for their new milk packaging. The pictures speak for themselves, they're beautiful, and if I bought these I could never bring myself to throw away an empty bottle and thus I would be doomed to live in a trash-hoarder's nest for the rest of my life :)

Bir başka İngiliz markası Cravendale yarı Fin/yarı İngiliz/%100 yetenekli sanatçı Sanna Annuka ile işbirliği yaparak yeni süt ambalajlarını ona tasarlattı. Fazla yoruma gerek yok, resimlerden göreceğiniz gibi çok güzeller. Bunlardan satın alsam sanırım şişelerini atmaya asla kıyamaz ve ömrümün kalanını yavaşça dolan bir çöp evde geçirmeye mahkum olurdum :)
The colors, the typeface, the adorable icons are so fitting for a milk pack, I wonder why they weren't designed beautifully like this in the first place? I really am looking forward to seeing more food packaging designed by artists. If products are everywhere and we will be drowning in waste, then the least we can do is make it beautiful!

Everything on this page is handmade so I am sure we can manage for one day :) {Although, while buying handmade is usually a great way to "stick it to the man", don't buy them today, buy them tomorrow.} Shakers could survive without buying anything at all, so can animals. So can we.

Liberty of London

Bad, bad blogger. I must be the only blogger who made an amazing trip to London and didn't blog about it. For all of you out there who are planning Europe trips, move London up to the number one spot you want to see, because trust me you want to see it. I have been to Istanbul, Milan, Venice, Philadelphia, Washington DC, briefly NY and a bunch of cities in Turkey, and London is by far my favorite. Ok apparently I haven't seen that many places but my mom and dad have seen cities all throughout Europe and it's their favorite too.
I was very fortunate to have a collegue who took the time to take me to all the nicest design stores. My favorites were on Kings Road (SW3). There were a couple of antique stores there (that got me head over heels) which I can't remember the names of, but they were near the big Designer's Guild stores(at which I drooled a lot). I suspect one of the stores is After Noah because of the vintage telephones, but I could be wrong. On the same street were Design House Stockholm, which was like a candy shop for an industrial designer, and The Holding Company. Other than these small but striking stores on Kings Road, we went to a lot of larger stores as well, The Conran Shop(where I got to try every lovely design classic there was) was awesome, Heal's was ok. The highlight of Heal's was the Peyton and Bryne in it, which was the cutest bakery ever with the most amazing cupcakes. You must go there if you go to London. We went to a bunch of stores in 2 days, 1 day near Farnborough and the 2nd day in London. Our last stop together was Regent Street, which had an awesome Habitat, but most importantly Liberty of London.

The store exterior. It is a beautiful Tudor revival building. According to wikipedia, the timbers used in this building were taken from 2 ships. It is the most original and stylish department store in the world.

The building is actually very large and wide but the street it's located on is kind of narrow so the building never shows up in photographs as a whole!

If you think they left the exterior original but modernized the interior, you are wrong. The interior is just as striking with the richest, warmest timbers, beautiful wooden beams, and exquisite fireplaces all throughout the building.

I was very fortunate to be there during the exhibition titled ‘Liberty celebrates 70 years of Knoll Past, Present and Future’ . I got to see so many design classics in such a beautiful atmosphere. The modern furniture contrasted so nicely with the old features of the building that it created a beautiful harmony of colors and textures. The pictures are not doing this exhibition any justice, I walked around the area 3-4 times, each time appreciating the beauty of each object. We see these pieces of furniture on the internet all the time, but seeing them for real made me realise that they are absolutely worth the high prices they are sold for. Amazing details, seriously.

The fashion area had such great pieces that I was drooling all over the place. I was literally in agony when I entered the bag lounge. I was cuddling a Marc Jacobs bag when I realised my collegue was gone. Everything, including Liberty's own brand was extremely expensive, luxurious, buttery and beautiful.

As you can see from the pictures, they have great lighting in the store, some parts are even dark with only blue/purple light. This definitely adds to the experience and you feel like you're in another world.

Another quirk of Liberty is their fabrics. There was an area of light, soft, vintage looking fabric, and another area of classic shirts made from those fabrics.

Most fabrics had this type of teeny-tiny floral prints in the sweetest colors.

Please note that I didn't take any of these pictures as I didn't know it was allowed inside, and also because I'm too shy to act like a tourist. In fact, despite the consequences I'm glad I had ditched the unprepared tourist uniform of sneakers and raincoat for a much classier ensemble that day: BCBG dress, sheer tights, peep-toe platform oxfords. What a day it was, starting at 9 am, walking the streets of London until 10 pm. When I finally arrived at my hotel room I thought my feet had been mutilated for life, they don't look like troll-feet anymore but 2 months later they aren't completely healed either! {}
Oh by the way, by collegue turned out to be quite the gourmet. All the restaurants she recommended turned out to be delicious. Her recommendation of that day was Villandry. It is a foodstore, bakery, restaurant and bar. I am still having dreams about the french onion soup I had there. Highly recommended.

PS: I am completely in love with every place I went in Britain. Oh how I wish I could move there now! Say hello to a new Anglophile. I already adored their language, literature, music, cinema and fashion. Now I adore their weather too! Random fact about me: my mom was in her last year of college, majoring in English Literature when she was pregnant with me. I was born on her week of finals!
