Dear readers, I'm desperately into the raw wood thing. I wanna reclaim me some wood. But despite the long hours I keep at the shore waiting for it to "drift" to me, and also despite digging some nearby rubbles, and despite keeping an eye on the neighbours' garbage, I can't find any wood to reclaim. We don't have any old barns nearby with wooden flooring waiting for me to tear off. I am considering buying new lumber and throwing it at our yard and leave it to rot for a couple of years. Would that work?? Is there a way to achieve this look?

Sevgili okuyucular, şu ham ahşap olayına bayılıyorum. Eskimiş ahşapları değerlendirmek istiyorum. Tek sorun denizden sürüklenmiş gibi görünen ahşaplar, kıyılardaki çaresiz bekleyişlerime rağmen sürüklenmek bilmiyorlar. Eşelediğim moloz yığınlarından da çıkmıyorlar. Komşunun alıcı gözle süzdüğüm çöpünden de. Etrafta ahşap yer döşemeleri tarafımdan sökülmeyi bekleyen eski ahırlar da yok. Yeni kereste alıp birkaç yıl bahçeye atmayı düşünmekteyim. İşe yarar mı bu? Bu görüntü nasıl elde edilir??

When I was little, I was terrifed of mushrooms. I would be stressed out whenever my family cooked mushrooms. I have a specific memory of me going for a walk at the forest with my family and my mother stepped on a mushroom. I had nightmares about how we were all going to be poisoned. I think this silly fear had something to do with the TV news being flooded by people dying of mushroom poisoning. I got over the fear and now not only can I eat them, but I am fascinated by them. I gathered a few products for you, inspired by the delightful world of mushrooms.

Küçükken, mantarlar beni dehşete düşürürdü. Evde ne zaman mantar pişse endişeye kapılırdım. Hatta bir defa ailemle ormanda gittiğimiz yürüyüşte annem bir mantara basınca ailecek zehirleneceğiz diye günlerce kabus yaşamıştım. Bu yersiz korkunun altında o zamanlar haftada bir TV'de çıkan "Mantardan Zehirlendiler" haberlerinin etkisi olsa gerek. Şimdi mantarları afiyetle yemekle kalmıyorum, onları büyüleyici buluyorum. Mantarların çekiciliğinden ilham alan birkaç ürünü sizler için toplarladım.

"The concept for this piece comes from a childhood memory of making mushroom spore prints, creating a graphic pattern that repeats the pattern of the mushroom gills after the spores fall from the mushroom. This was the perfect inspiration for spice shakers. The spice powder is contained in the vessel form and can be shaken out through slots in the gill structure, creating a linear pattern."

"Mushrooms Ate My Furniture, by designer Shinwei Rhoda Yen, is of garden furniture that is made with natural wood, embedded with mushrooms' spawn. After a time of exposure to the weather, mushrooms will grow out and live with the furniture for a few more years. As the nutritional material from the wood is eaten by the mushrooms, the furniture will start to break down, eventually dying while giving its life to the mushrooms."

I think "mortal" furniture is a good response to the throw-away culture. If we are going to get bored of it and eventually get rid of it, why not give the furniture a certain, natural lifetime?

İklim koşullarına bir süre maruz kaldıktan sonra üzerinde mantarlar büyüyor ve mobilyayla birlikte birkaç yıl daha yaşıyorlar. And thats where my imagination comes from - The forests and animals." says Klaus Haapaniemi. He is the designer of these gorgeous series for Iittala, and they are called "Taika", which apparently means "magic" in Finnish.

The London-based Finnish designer's works are often influenced by folklore. He often uses surreal animals and elements in his prints. You can read a full interview with him here, and buy the Taika dinnerware here.

I got a Turkish comment (which is rare), so as usual I click click clicked to see who the commenter was, and to my surprise I discovered a lurking talent. Baris Gun Sahin is a senior art student, he's studying Traditional Turkish Handcrafts. His work is just adorable, he has a modern take to the traditional Turkish tile art. Now, design business in Turkey is nothing like what it is in the USA. People are lucky if they can find corporate jobs, freelancing is a distant dream, and being an indie designer is unheard of (unless you have relatives amongst the few 'famous' designers. Baris is selling his work on Etsy, which I thought no one in Turkey really knew about. So, imagine my joy and surprise when I discovered this indie artist who is on such a brave path and has great work. Click here for his Etsy shop where he sells his hand-painted one of a kind work.

Blog'uma Türkçe bir yorum aldım (ki bu çok nadir oluyor), ve her zamanki gibi 'kimmiş??' diye tıklayıverdim. Bir de ne göreyim, gizli kalmış bir yetenek. Barış Gün Şahin Mimar Sinan'da Geleneksel Türk El Sanatları bölümünde okuyor. Kendi stüdyosunu kuracak kadar cesur, satışlarını ise aslında el işlerinin satıldığı çok büyük bir site olan, ama nedense Türkiye'de pek bilinmeyen Etsy'den yapıyor. En güzel tarafı ise el boyaması işleri gerçekten orijinal, sevimli ve zevkli. Keşke ülkemizde böyle kendi halinde yaratıcı işler yapan daha çok bağımsız çalışan tasarımcı olsa.
